Understanding prophecy is not an exercise in fulfilled prediction alone; it is a multifaceted; John 1:1, discipline that requires attention to language, literary form, historical context, and the lived-in Hebrew communities that produced (the Prophets) and preserved (Masada) these texts and the Son of God; who taught and walked the words of Jeremiah 31:31 into existence; from the moment of Virgin Birth.
Principles that guide our approach
Purpose-driven inquiry: We begin by asking why a text was produced and for whom. Prophecy functions within communities—liturgical, political, cultic, or social—and its meaning is shaped by those settings.
Textual precision: Close reading of the original languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and related inscriptions) is essential. Nuance in vocabulary, syntax, and rhetorical devices can alter interpretive possibilities.
Historical-contextual grounding: Prophetic discourse interacts with events, institutions, and ideological conflicts of its time; and ours. Placing texts against the archaeological and socio-political backdrop prevents anachronistic readings.
Genre and form criticism: Distinguishing oracles, visions, symbolic actions, lament, and eschatological imagery clarifies function and expectation within prophetic corpora.
Reception history: Later interpretive traditions—Second Temple literature, Dead Sea Scrolls, rabbinic readings, and early Christian exegesis—reshape how prophecies were understood and applied; only to the degree where man adds nor substracts.
Methodological transparency; liner, systematic as it is written: We make our tools and not assumptions explicit so readers can follow the interpretive path, test alternatives, and draw responsible conclusions.
Practical pathways to understanding
Read with genres in mind: Treat oracles against nations differently from covenant lawsuits, oracles of salvation, or apocalyptic visions. Each has its own horizon and rhetorical aim.
Reconstruct historical referents cautiously: Identify plausible historical anchors (kings, wars, cultic reforms), but distinguish between an original referent and later reinterpretation or typologizing; i.e. the (added) Rapture of the 19th century AD; No prophetic reference, including the Apostle Paul.
